Senor Rico

At my place of employment, I'd hesitate to say that at least a third of the workers are hispanic. So, understandably, much of the food offered in the lunch room caters to this population. And this is certainly fine with me. Tamales, Papusas, Tacos, Flan, Chilequiles, and much more are offered during lunch. Some of my favorite foods. Some caterers are better then others, but thats to be expected.

But what is one to do after lunch? Mid-afternoon, a few hours after lunch and a few hours before the end of the work day, what is a man to do to get that extra empty calories to get through the day. Well, the only place to turn when working in a factory in the middle of warehouse row in downtown LA is the vending machines. Luckily, even the vending machines cater to the audience I have mentioned. Doritos brand chili lime chips, Sangria sodas, and funky microwave burritos (which i'll review later) are offered.

But my favorite these days, is the Mexican Style rice pudding offered by Senor Rico. Made in Gardena, California and delivered daily it is usually quite fresh. Each cup is topped off with a dusting of cinnamon that really makes it a step up. Every few weeks a Dulce de Leche version appears with an incredibly sweet caramel at the bottom.

The other thing that I find entertaining about Senor Rico Rice Pudding is its Logo. When the name Senor Rico would suggest a regal male figure, the character found to the left of the logo is a peppy little girl.... or is she? Regardless, it has a cuteness and style reminescent of japanese product design.

Not sure if Senor Rico is available anywhere else outside of the American Apparel food hall, but keep your eyes peeled.

Oh wow...this was done in '05. I'm just now seeing Senor Rico rice pudding in stores in S. Carolina. Only in Wal-Mart though. What is that saying, a lot of Hispanics shop there? I'm not sure what the reason is, but I'm glad. This rice pudding rocks! I've been buying this every week for the past month. I love it. I used to buy Kozy Shack rice pudding, but now I've switched over to Senor Rico. It's cheaper too. I'm trying to figure out how Senor Rico doesn't use eggs and still manage to have a nice taste and texture.

I buy it in San Antonio, TX - walmart for 94 cents. It's expensive for 1 cup. Kozy Shack is 2.00 for a tub.

However, it's worth it. Especially if you don't have any extra cinnamon on hand.

Ahhh! The horror! Why did I look for the nutrition information on this stuff!?!? I love it, but knowing how bad it is for me.. I will never fully be able to enjoy it again. Yes I will. I will just have to spend longer in the gym everyday. Ugh.

I just made the mistake of buying what I thought was a 6-pack of Raymundo flan at Sam's Club (I always buy it at Walmart, so I figured it was the same stuff). Wow! This is a Señor Rico copycat product, and it is something else. Flan, of course, should be soft and delicate and easy to spoon. This Rico stuff, however, is firm and spongy and slippery and has a chemical taste unlike ANY flan you've ever eaten. It's almost impossible to eat this stuff without it flying across the room like some slimy jellyfish. After the first one, you won't be trying it again anyway though, and, like me, you'll throw the whole batch out immediately. Henceforth, I'll be READING THE LABELS more carefully.

I found this product at a local discount store here in Portland, Oregon. I'm usually not a Walmart shopper, but I think I will go there just for this rice pudding. It is so good . Better than Kozy Shack for sure. I put a little bit on my chopped pears and and it tastes great or by itself. LOVE this stuff.

I'm chowing down on some right now (it's 2014!) and thought I would check around to see if other people liked it, too. Good stuff.

I can't stand shopping at Walmart. Aldi periodically carries Senor Rico rice pudding cups. They are awesome.

Señor Rico is terrific rice pudding. Love the extra, dark cinnamon on top. It really adds to the flavor and enjoyment. Aldi sells it in central Florida for 89 cents per cup (September 2015). Great addition when taking lunch to work or having as a late night snack.

West Central Fl Walmart carries it and I agree, the taste is much better than Kozy and the label is AWESOME! The little girl on the label is as close to Malfada as any I've seen. Mafalda is a 6-year old Argintine comic character and ran from 64-73. She's was and is very popular in Central America and has slowly been making her way here. Take a look on the web for some of the most popular strips.

Best stuff ever! Senor Rico wins by a landslide. KozyShack is poo compared to Senor Rico. I can find it at Aldi's here in northwestern, PA but you gotta get it fast because it flies off the shelf quickly. Also found it at Wal-Mart. Costs a little more but if Aldi's is out I gotta do what I gotta do! Wish I could find a recipe to make something similar at home. All I have tried come out totally wrong :(
